RTO vs RPO: A plain-English guide you can share with leadership

Two questions drive every recovery strategy:

  • RTO (Recovery Time Objective): how long can we be down?
  • RPO (Recovery Point Objective): how much data can we lose?

Abstract blue waves

If leadership says “as close to zero as possible,” ask what budget and constraints they’ll accept. High availability, immutability, and fast storage cost money—so define tradeoffs.

Quick examples (plain language):

  • Payroll system: RTO 2 hours, RPO 15 minutes
  • File shares: RTO 4 hours, RPO 1 hour
  • Non-critical analytics: RTO 1 day, RPO 4 hours
